The difference between a tea light and a votive is the cup. A tea light comes in one, so it drops into most holders and burns about five hours. A votive doesn't — it needs a snug glass holder, and in one it burns fifteen hours or more. Same wax, longer evening: our beeswax votives.

How long do beeswax tea lights burn?

Each one burns for five hours or more — long enough to light dinner and still be glowing when the dishes are done. Beeswax is a harder, denser wax, so it burns slower and a small candle lasts a good while.

A few things that help:

Keep it out of a draft. Moving air makes any flame burn faster and flicker — a still spot gives you the full, even burn.
Burn it in one sitting when you can. A tea light gives its best burn start to finish. If you do need to put it out early, try to leave about half the wax in the cup — that's usually enough for a good second burn. Shorter, repeated burns mostly waste wax.

Common Questions

How long do beeswax tea lights burn?

About five hours each — sometimes a little more. They're happiest lit once and left to burn all the way down, so they suit an evening when you've got the hours to spare.

Do tea lights need a holder?

Yes. The clear cup holds the wax, not the heat — it gets hot enough to mark a table. Set them in a holder or on something fire-safe.

Will these fit my holder, lantern, or wax warmer?

Yes — they're standard tea light size at 1.5″ across, so anything made for tea lights will take them. Our clear cups run a little deeper than the aluminum kind, which means more wax and a longer burn, and they let the glow out the sides instead of hiding it. The cup is made in the USA from polycarbonate rated UL 94 V-0 for flame resistance — the highest class on that standard — and it's the only cup we've ever used.

Tea light or votive — which one do I want?

Tea light if you want to light it and forget it: it comes in its own cup, fits any standard holder, and burns about five hours — one evening. Votive if you want one candle to carry you through several evenings: same 1.5″ across but taller, fifteen to seventeen hours, and it needs a snug glass holder to catch the wax as it melts. Can I leave a tea light burning overnight, or while I'm out?

Please don't — and we'd say that about any candle, ours included. A tea light is a small open flame, and the cup gets hot. It makes a cozy nighttime light while you're awake, so save it for when you're around to enjoy it, and put it out when you leave the room.

Are beeswax tea lights safe around kids and pets?

The flame is the thing to respect, not the wax. Nothing is added to our beeswax, so there's no perfume going into the air — but a lit tea light is still a small fire in a hot cup. Keep it up high, out of reach of little hands and curious noses, on something that can take the heat, and never leave it burning on its own. Birds are the exception — see below.

Are beeswax candles safe to burn around birds?

We don't recommend burning any candle around birds, including ours. Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems, and anything that burns puts something into the air. Your bird's safety matters more to us than a sale.

Do you scent your candles with essential oils?

No — and that's on purpose. Essential oils are natural, but they're still fragrance: concentrated plant aromatics released into your air. For people who are sensitive to scent, they can be every bit as hard to live with as synthetic perfume — something we learned firsthand before it became a company rule. Can I recycle the clear cup?

Honestly, not in most curbside bins — polycarbonate is a #7 plastic, and very few programs take it. We'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. If a cup you refill again and again is what you're after, that's our Moon Drop tea lights: the same beeswax in a metal cup made to be filled over and over.
