What “one ingredient” actually means

Beeswax is the only candle wax that arrives finished. Bees make it to store honey in, and when we melt it down and give it a wick, the ingredient list is done — one line long. Soy, coconut, and palm waxes all start as food crops and become wax in a factory: pressed, refined, bleached, hydrogenated. That doesn't make them dangerous. It makes them manufactured, and a manufactured wax can be blended with anything.

That's why the “100%” matters. Since no law sets a minimum, a “beeswax candle” can legally contain mostly other waxes, and blends are common — beeswax is expensive, and stretching it with paraffin or soy is how the price comes down. The number in our name is the whole promise: nothing stretched, nothing added, nothing to disclose because there's nothing else in there.

Pure beeswax also behaves in ways a blend can't fake. It's noticeably heavy for its size, it develops a soft white frost called bloom when stored cool, and it carries that faint honey scent from the hive. Why beeswax candles cost more

Bees make wax slowly, in small flakes, as part of storing honey — a hive produces only a little in a season, and no factory can hurry that up. Every other candle wax is grown by the field and processed by the ton. So beeswax costs several times what soy or paraffin costs, before a single candle is poured, and that's the honest reason a beeswax candle is priced the way it is.

What you get back is burn time. Beeswax is the densest candle wax with the highest melting point, so it burns slower and brighter than a soy or paraffin candle of the same size. A candle that costs more and lasts longer usually comes out closer than the price tags suggest.

Designs you won't find anywhere else

Most beeswax candles come from the same commercial molds, which is why so many of them look alike. Big Moon Beeswax designs are original — drawn and made in our studio, from the carved pillars down to the bee-imprinted tea lights and votives. Those little formats are the ones every other maker leaves plain; we put our bees on them.

It means the candle on your table isn't the same one on everyone else's table. And when it burns down, there's another original waiting — the studio follows the seasons, and so do the designs.
